32 Years Later, LBA Finally Gets Multiplayer

Little Big Adventure holds a very special place in my gaming history, and if you've been following the site, you already know why : Twinsen's Quest is one of those projects made by a team that genuinely loves what they do. Studio 2.21 has just released the public beta of Patch 1.2 on Steam, and this update is seriously packed : local co-op for up to three players, an optional overhaul of the combat system, some much-needed quality-of-life improvements, and a macOS port. The team keeps shaping this remake by listening directly to its community, and you can feel that with every patch.

💡 In a nutshell :

  • The Patch 1.2 beta is available now on Steam through the preview branch.
  • A local co-op mode for up to 3 players makes its debut, a first in the franchise's 32-year history.
  • The combat system is fully customizable through new advanced options such as Impact Freeze, combos and Lock-on.
  • An Apple Silicon macOS version and a winter outfit round out the update.

LBA Goes Multiplayer : History Takes a Breath

A Feature That Took 32 Years to Arrive

The original game was released in France on October 14, 1994. Thirty-two years later, Twinsun can finally be explored with company. Picture a split-screen with Twinsen surrounded by two companions : it's one of those things we probably stopped expecting to ever see. And yet, here it is. What a joy to see this feature finally arrive!

This is clearly the big surprise of the patch. Ben and his team have developed a same-screen co-op mode that lets up to two companions join Twinsen. Designed with family play in mind, the mode puts accessibility front and center :

  • Controller support : each player gets their own controller, while Twinsen can be controlled with the keyboard and the guests use gamepads.
  • Maximum forgiveness : companions have their own color, dedicated outfit, health bar and unlimited clovers.
  • Full interaction : they can throw their Magic Ball, use the Proto-Pack, push or grab crates together, and automatically teleport back to Twinsen if they fall too far behind. They also take cover when you do.

Proof in action, straight from the franchise's official account :

Combat Mechanics, Completely Up to You

More Depth, Zero Pressure

Studio 2.21 has added a series of new options under Options → Advanced. The best part of this update is the approach : everything is disabled by default. If you prefer to keep the original feel, you can. Your experience stays intact. For players who want more depth, the new options can be enabled individually :

  • Impact Freeze & Camera Shake : a brief freeze-frame and subtle camera shake with every hit, giving attacks a stronger sense of impact.
  • Melee Combos : a three-hit combo with input buffering that lets you chain attacks together smoothly.
  • Destructive Magic Ball Recall : the ball remains on the ground after being thrown and damages enemies along its return path when recalled.
  • Chain Ricochets : the Magic Ball bounces from enemy to enemy depending on your magic level, with up to four bounces at level 4.
  • New Lock-on System : a ring appears beneath the target, along with a health bar and damage history, while lock-on through walls has been removed.

Everything is disabled by default. If you prefer the original experience, it stays intact. If you want to push things further, the options are there.

Quality of Life, a Winter Outfit and macOS Support

The Little Additions That Make a Difference

Beyond multiplayer and combat, this update brings several fixes requested by the community, along with a healthy dose of QOL (Quality of Life) improvements :

  • Objective indicator : your current quest now appears on the Holomap and directly beneath your clovers on the HUD, with the option to disable it.
  • Audio improvements : menu sound effects have been added, and music now resumes exactly where it stopped after closing the inventory.
  • Snow outfit : a complete winter outfit with a pom-pom hat unlocks after the snowboard cutscene and remains stored in your save.
  • macOS support : a dedicated version for machines equipped with Apple Silicon is officially joining the game.

💾 A winter outfit that unlocks after the snowboard cutscene... Studio 2.21 really understood the spirit of the franchise. These little touches are exactly the kind of thing the original game could have used to feel complete.

Twinsen Still Has Plenty of Adventures Ahead

Patch 1.2 says something important about Studio 2.21 : the team didn't stop when the game launched. They keep expanding it, refining it, listening to feedback and surprising their community with features we had stopped expecting. Local multiplayer in LBA in 2026 is one of those updates that makes you smile for no particular reason.

At the very least, it gives us a great excuse to head back to Twinsun, this time with some company. What about you : are you jumping into co-op right away, or are you waiting for the final version of the patch?
