« You must gather your party before venturing forth » : the phrase that rocked hundreds of hours of my life

How many times. Honestly, how many times did I see that message pop up on screen. At every map transition, Baldur's Gate stopped you dead in your tracks just to remind you. And yet, you smiled every single time. Because that party was yours. You had built it piece by piece, you knew everyone's quirks, and somehow, you could not wait to see what the next zone had in store for them.

Baldur's Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2, released in 1998 and 2000, are two monuments that redefined the Western RPG for the following twenty years. And in 2026, thanks to the Enhanced Editions reworked by Beamdog, they have not aged a day. This article is part of our complete guide to PC remakes and remasters in 2026 : absolutely everything worth your time and money, broken down game by game.

These games taught me everything about Dungeons and Dragons

I discovered Baldur's Gate through a friend, back in middle school. I was deep into my Choose Your Own Adventure phase : Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, the whole crew. And when he put the game in front of me for the very first time, I instantly knew something massive was happening. It was the exact same spirit, brought straight to the screen, with real music, real animations, and a world that felt like it wanted to expand infinitely in every direction.

And that is where I learned literally everything that would serve me in every single RPG that followed. Damage dice expressed as « 3d4 » ? Baldur's Gate. The face of a Troll, a Gnoll, a Doppelganger ? Baldur's Gate. The spell mechanics of the Dungeons and Dragons universe, the classes, the alignments, the saving throws against magic ? You get the picture. This game was, for me, a living and playable encyclopedia. And this time, instead of flipping through the pages, you simply fell into them, emerging three hours later without even realizing it.

💾 I still remember Minsc and his legendary « Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes ! ». Imoen crashing the party right out of Candlekeep, whom we absolutely could not leave behind. The Jaheira and Khalid couple. And the dwarf and his sidekick who never missed a chance to bicker throughout the entire adventure. Characters like these, they just stay with you forever.

Baldur's Gate I : the Bhaalspawn and the Sword Coast

It all begins in Candlekeep, a fortified library-city where you grew up under the protection of Gorion, your mage tutor. Your life turns upside down during a forced midnight escape : Gorion is murdered by a heavy armored silhouette, Sarevok, and you find yourself totally alone on the Sword Coast with nothing but your questions and a starter sword you barely know how to swing.

What follows is an open world full of taverns, infested forests, underground dungeons and merchant cities. The gradual revelation of your identity, the Bhaalspawn, offspring of the deceased Lord of Murder, is one of the finest narrative arcs PC RPGs have ever delivered. The main quest pulls you into an iron crisis paralyzing the entire region, leading to a final showdown against Sarevok deep within the bowels of Baldur's Gate. Between these major events, an entire breathing, living world completely consumes you.

The local wildlife that wanted you dead

One of the greatest thrills in Baldur's Gate is the sheer variety and consistency of the bestiary. And some creatures teach you lessons you will never forget. Trolls, for instance. Their skin regenerates in real time : you cut them in half, they get right back up. The only way to finish them off permanently is with fire or acid. Missing Melf's Acid Arrow in your spell bar ? Get ready to watch the exact same Troll stand up for the fifth time with a nasty smirk.

We also had the Phase Spiders, teleporting to bite your back at the worst possible moment. The hyena-headed Gnolls, often the first real organized hordes you faced in the game. And above all, the Doppelgangers : shapeshifters who took the appearance of characters you knew, playing a key role in the political plot of the first installment. There was something truly disturbing about not knowing who you could trust anymore.

💡 Campus tip for the Trolls : Always keep a fire or acid spell handy. A magical torch in your inventory can totally save the day. Without it, the frustration of watching them rise again and again is absolutely guaranteed. And that is the kind of frustration that sticks.

Baldur's Gate II : Shadows of Amn — The Sequel That Defined an Era

If the first Baldur's Gate laid the foundation, Baldur's Gate II built upon it the grandest monument Western RPGs have ever seen. You wake up imprisoned in the dungeons of the mage Jon Irenicus, who is performing dark experiments on you to steal your divine essence. After a spectacular escape into the streets of Athkatla, the cosmopolitan capital of Amn, your goal is twofold : find Imoen and reclaim your soul.

Everything is darker, more epic, and vastly denser. The game takes you from the depths of the Underdark to the Outer Planes, weaving through thieves' guilds, mad mages' asylums, and side quests that would put most modern RPGs to shame. The sheer volume of weapons, spells, and magical items to buy, sell, identify, and master was absolutely insane for the time. And the character interactions, the romances, the deep personal quests : this is where Baldur's Gate invented the RPG companion as we know it today.

The Underdark and Its Very Unfriendly Inhabitants

BG2 plunges you into the depths of the Underdark, one of the most memorable zones in PC RPG history. And the enemies dwelling there perfectly match the oppressive atmosphere.

The Mind Flayers (Illithids) are arguably the most terrifying creatures in the saga. They possess psychic powers capable of paralyzing your entire party and the ability to devour your brain instantly for an immediate game over. Then come the Beholders, with their anti-magic central eye and stalks firing rays of disintegration, petrification, and death. Against these foes, improvisation simply doesn't work. You had to plan, prepare, and know your spells by heart before even stepping into the room.

⚠️ If you jump into BG2 without playing BG1 first, you’re going to miss a massive chunk of context and character arcs. The returning companions carry an emotional weight you won’t feel the same way if you start with the sequel. Plus, the Mind Flayers at the entrance of the Underdark have turned many new players into frustrated ex-players.

The Enhanced Editions : What Actually Changed

When the Enhanced Editions were released, it was a true breath of fresh air. Finally, we could play these games on modern displays without spending an hour tweaking files just to get a decent resolution. Beamdog did a serious job, and the changes go far beyond a simple coat of paint.

Resolution and Visual Comfort

The originals were capped at 640x480 for BG1 and 800x600 for BG2. The Enhanced Editions support 4K, Widescreen, and Ultra-wide formats without distorting the image. The scroll-wheel zoom, completely absent back then, allows for real-time view adjustments. Moreover, Beamdog ported BG1 to the upgraded BG2 engine, allowing you to enjoy classes and kits from the second game right from character creation in the first. A detail that changes everything for those wanting to play specific archetypes from the get-go.

New Companions and Unseen Content

Beamdog added four new fully voiced companions : Dorn Il-Khan, a brutal and fascinating Half-Orc Blackguard ; Neera, a Half-Elf Wild Mage whose erratic magic is a double-edged sword ; Rasaad yn Bashir, a Human Monk with a truly compelling redemption arc ; and Baeloth Barrityl, a Sorcerer from a rather... unexpected location. Each has their own questline, romances, and dedicated map areas. It’s content that genuinely enriches both games without feeling tacked on.

The Quest Journal was completely rewritten to be finally legible without re-reading ten pages of handwritten-style notes. The quick-loot bar saves you from individually clicking every item on the ground after a fight. And the Siege of Dragonspear expansion fills the narrative gap between the end of BG1 and the start of BG2 : a missing link fans had been clamoring for for years, finally realized.

The Only Real Debate : The Cutscenes

There is one point that still divides the community in 2026 : the cutscenes. The originals, in 90s pre-rendered 3D, had a dark, gritty grain that perfectly matched the mood. Beamdog replaced them with hand-drawn animatics, which are sharper on HD screens but lose some of that raw, mysterious 90s edge. It’s not a dealbreaker — not at all. But if you grew up with the originals, there’s a small sting of nostalgia. For a first playthrough in 2026, you won't mind for a second.

It's a bit like the transition from chunky pixel sprites to HD graphics in certain remasters : both have their charm, and the current version has the advantage of clarity. You can't always have both. And honestly, the core experience lies elsewhere.

The Peoples of Faerûn : Who You Play, Who You Fight

The Dungeons & Dragons universe is also about a diversity of races and peoples that give the world true depth. At character creation, you choose from Humans, versatile and capable of excelling anywhere ; Elves, often focused on magic or archery ; Dwarves, hardy and excellent warriors ; Halflings, agile and deadly thieves ; Gnomes with their affinity for illusion ; Half-Elves and Half-Orcs for those wanting raw brute strength. The Enhanced Editions enrich this further with new companions, notably Dorn and Neera, who bring their own cultures and conflicts into the party.

On the adversary side, you will encounter the Dark Elves (Drow) in the Underdark, generally hostile, with the exception of characters like Viconia whom you can recruit. Not to mention the Trolls, Giant Spiders, Gnolls, Mind Flayers, Beholders, and the aforementioned Doppelgangers. An entire coherent ecosystem, anchored in D&D rules, giving the impression of a world that existed before you and will continue long after.

Price, Where to Buy, and 2026 Verdict

In 2026, the prices are incredibly reasonable for the value these games provide. BG1 Enhanced Edition and BG2 Enhanced Edition are available for $19.50 each on Steam. The complete bundle featuring both games and the Siege of Dragonspear expansion is priced at $39. For hundreds of hours of gameplay, it’s hard to find a better price-to-performance ratio in the RPG genre.

🕹️ Where to Buy : Steam and GOG offer both titles at the same price. GOG provides the DRM-free version, meaning you own the file with no connection required. Steam better integrates cloud saves if you play on multiple machines. Both work perfectly on Windows 11 in 2026 with no additional setup. Keep an eye on SteamDB for sale alerts : the complete bundle regularly drops to around $10 during major Steam sales.

For the price and the hundreds of hours of gameplay included, these are truly must-play games in 2026 — perfect for chilling out in the evening after work. The Sword Coast and Athkatla have a way of making you forget the time.

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition FAQ

Do I need to play Baldur's Gate 1 before the 2nd one ?

Yes, it is highly recommended. BG2 is a direct sequel, and knowledge of the characters, factions, and context makes the second game far richer emotionally. Returning companions from BG1 carry a weight you simply won't feel the same way if you dive straight into the second. Start with the first.

Does Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition run well on Windows 11 in 2026 ?

Flawlessly. Whether via Steam or GOG, both versions install and run without a hitch on Windows 11. No DOSBox or emulator tinkering is required, unlike the original 1998 versions. Beamdog has kept these titles updated regularly.

What is the real difference between the Enhanced Edition and the 1998 original ?

Native resolution up to 4K, Widescreen and Ultra-wide support, scroll-wheel zoom, a unified engine with BG2, four new companions with their own quests and dialogue, a completely rewritten quest journal, quick-loot bar, thousands of bug fixes, and the integration of Siege of Dragonspear. The original cutscenes were replaced by hand-drawn animatics. The soul of the game is intact ; the comfort is vastly superior.

Is Baldur's Gate 3 a direct sequel to these games ?

Larian Studios' BG3 is set in the same universe and references iconic characters from the first two games, but it’s a distinct story with new protagonists and uses D&D 5e rules instead of the AD&D 2e used in the originals. The two sagas are independent.

Baldur's Gate in 2026 : Essentials, Then and Now

In 2026, the Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 Enhanced Editions are the definitive way to experience these two epics. Modern compatibility, new companions, improved quality of life, and bug fixes more than justify the $39 bundle. These games laid foundations that Western RPGs still build upon today, and they are as much of a joy to play now as they were in the late 90s — provided you embrace their pacing and mechanical depth.

Just chilling in the evening after work, as I said. That’s exactly it. The Sword Coast and Athkatla never close. And your party is waiting.
