If I had to explain why this site is named Little Big Campus, it all starts right here. Little Big Adventure is the game my buddy MaitreTréant first introduced to me. My brother was there too. We ran it on an AMD 486, passing the keyboard back and forth to progress through the journey. It was 1994, and we didn't yet know that this game would never truly leave us. Thirty years later, when the studio [2.21] announced Twinsen's Quest, the remake of the first installment, we all shared the exact same reaction : a mix of pure joy, hope, and a tiny kernel of anxiety deep down. Could they truly revive Twinsun without stripping away its soul ? We finally have the answer.
What Exactly Is Little Big Adventure ?
A 1994 Outlier That Refused to Be Categorized
Little Big Adventure, created by Frédérick Raynal and Didier Chanfray at Adeline Software in 1994, is one of those games often called an "anomaly" because it defies classification. It isn't an RPG, not quite a strategy game, nor a pure platformer. It’s a third-person adventure game with an isometric camera, a Magic Ball as its primary weapon, and a unique movement mode system that took a bit of time to master. Normal, Athletic, Aggressive, and Discreet : depending on the situation, you had to choose your behavior, and it changed everything about how Twinsen interacted with the world.
The story takes place on Twinsun, a planet nestled between two suns and divided into two hemispheres by an impassable mountain range called the Hamalayi. You play as Twinsen, a young Quetch living a peaceful life with his partner Zoe, until Dr. FunFrock seizes control of the entire planet using two formidable technologies : cloning and teleportation. Twinsen is arrested and thrown into a psychiatric asylum for speaking of a forbidden prophecy linked to the goddess Sendell. And that is where it all begins.
What LBA Truly Represents : A Game Passed from Hand to Hand
Three Players, One Keyboard, and Hours That Vanished
When I think back to our first playthroughs, what comes to mind isn't a specific level or a boss. It’s the image of the three of us huddled in front of the screen, passing the keyboard back and forth depending on the situation. MaitreTréant had discovered the game first and pulled us in. My brother and I followed immediately. We learned everything on the fly, without a manual, without a walkthrough. Sometimes you had to be in Discreet mode to lob your Ball over an obstacle. Other times, Normal movement allowed for a more precise, direct shot. We’d gently argue over who was best suited to handle the next challenge.
What won us over immediately is that LBA is unlike anything else. You’re not in a fighting game, nor an RPG with stats to manage, nor a strategy title. You’re in an adventure that feels like an interactive film, with genuine emotion behind it. From the very first hours, you find yourself on the side of the people oppressed by FunFrock and his clone armies. You just want to help them. Discovering the islands one by one, meeting the Rabbibots, Grobos, Quetches, and Spheros — each with their unique physiology — and slowly joining the resistance... The game has its own rhythm, its own soul. And that soul is impossible to forget.
💾 We used to run LBA on an AMD 486. The load times between maps were long, and the black fades between zones were part of the journey. Thirty years later, these tiny details still bring a smile. It was a different way of gaming — slower, more contemplative, though we didn't realize it at the time.
The Announcement of Twinsen's Quest : Between Hope and Anxiety
A Remake Crafted by the Original Creators Themselves
Let’s be honest : before Twinsen's Quest was announced, we were all waiting for LBA 3. We had spent years watching, hoping, and dissecting every rumor. Then, one day, a remake of the first game was announced, led by [2.21] studio founded by Benoit Limare, with the direct support of Frédérick Raynal and Didier Chanfray, the original creators. Among the new developers who joined the journey, Ben perfectly embodies this spirit : people coming to the project with a sincere love for the franchise, rather than just names on an organizational chart.
The project almost didn't see the light of day. A name change, an engine shift (from Unreal Engine to Unity), and even the cancellation of a brand-new third episode to focus entirely on this remake. We followed it all from the start : the artworks, the videos, the progressive announcements. And the day we finally got our hands on it, the curiosity was real. What would a Little Big Adventure made by a new team, with the original creators in support, feel like twenty-five years later ?
What Twinsen's Quest Changes Concretely
From Pre-rendered Isometric 3D to Modern Real-Time 3D
The first thing that hits you when launching Twinsen's Quest is the art direction. The style is warmer, more colorful, with lighting and shadows that give depth to every environment. Cloud shadows drift over the scenery, and this single detail is enough to breathe life into the world in a way we never imagined in the original. Twinsun breathes now. At first glance, the more stylized graphics slightly caught us off guard — MaitreTréant, my brother, and myself. Our visual landmarks from 1994 were deeply rooted. But we let go, and the warm colors, the lights, and the enveloping music did their work. It felt like being home, wrapped in a warm quilt in the middle of winter.
On the gameplay side, the changes are significant. Farewell to behavior modes : no more switching between Normal, Athletic, Aggressive, and Discreet via a menu. Twinsen runs, jumps, and fights naturally, with everything flowing without interruption. The Magic Ball now features aim assist, with a visible trajectory line before you throw. You can throw while moving. Wall collision damage while running has vanished. And the map edges are no longer the black voids of the past. Many small things have changed, but the core remains : you recognize every place, every character, every pivotal moment of the story.
The story remains faithful to about 95% of the original. The major narrative addition is Luna, Twinsen's little sister, who serves as the narrator and strengthens the emotional core of the tale. Zoe has also been reworked to have more presence than in the 1994 version. Furthermore, the prologue is longer, allowing you to truly bond with Twinsen’s peaceful life before everything falls apart.

How the Remake Changed Our Relationship with the Original
When Twinsen's Quest Makes LBA 1 Feel a Bit Somber
The three of us finished Twinsen's Quest on our own, within a week or two. And we all had the same conversation afterward. MaitreTréant told me he loved it, and so did my brother. As for me... a month after finishing the remake, I decided to fire up the original LBA 1, just to see how it felt. Strangely, the game seemed a little empty, a bit colder. I hit walls head-on while running again, and I saw the square maps with black transitions once more. I still love this game, deeply, but something had changed in my relationship with it. If that’s the case... it means Raynal and Chanfray truly succeeded. Convincing someone with a remake, more than 25 years after the original, is no small feat.
LBA is a game that feels good, where you feel safe, like being inside a cotton bubble. The remake managed to keep that intact. And that is perhaps what matters most.
The Future of the Franchise : What About LBA 3 ?
A Sign That Doesn't Deceive
We have been waiting for LBA 3 for years. In the meantime, the developers at [2.21] recently shared a glowing image of Twinsun's Ball, accompanied by the message "It's Glowing again…". This strongly suggests that an LBA 2 remake is on the way. Our hopes are high, and we will obviously be there to don the Ancestor's Tunic and save Twinsun once again. While we wait for LBA 3.

FAQ
Is Twinsen's Quest faithful to the original Little Big Adventure ?
About 95%. The story, the main characters, the islands, the iconic puzzles : it's all there. The most notable changes are the removal of behavior modes replaced by direct fluid controls, the addition of Luna as a narrator, and a more modern art direction. The soundtrack has been re-orchestrated by original composer Philippe Vachey, ensuring total consistency with the game's spirit.
Do I need to have played the original to enjoy Twinsen's Quest ?
Not at all. Twinsen's Quest is a perfect entry point for the franchise. The adventure stands on its own, and the enhanced prologue helps you bond with the characters before the story accelerates. For veterans, it’s a rediscovery with 2024 comfort.
Is an LBA 2 remake planned ?
Everything seems to point in that direction. [2.21] recently posted an image of Twinsun's Ball with the message "It's Glowing again…", which is a very LBA-esque way of announcing that something is in the works. No official date yet, but the community is on high alert.
