Released in March 2003 on PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, Jurassic Park Operation Genesis has long represented the ultimate management game for an entire generation of players. The Australian studio Blue Tongue Entertainment, backed by Universal Interactive, finally materialized the fantasy we had all been carrying around since the movies : build, populate and run a dinosaur park from scratch. We reunited with the cult figures of the saga, starting with good old John Hammond, which instantly boosted the immersion. In spirit, the game closely mirrored a SimCity or a Zoo Tycoon : you had to constantly juggle between park economy, visitor happiness and the security of every enclosure.

Building your Jurassic empire always began with the exact same action : getting your hands dirty. Throughout the game, we sent our dig teams all over the globe, across nine different sites, to bring back fossils and kickstart research on the DNA they contained.
Fossils, DNA percentages and buried treasures
- You had to recover at least 50% of the DNA of a species to hope to hatch it in our laboratories.
- The higher the DNA percentage climbed, the longer the dinosaur born in our labs lived once released into the park.
- From time to time, our researchers stumbled upon very rare materials, like opals, gold or silver.
- Selling these treasures really helped replenish the funds during tough financial times.
💾 Who remembers leaving the dig sites running in the background for hours, just to watch that famous DNA percentage climb before finally launching the incubation ? A simple, almost meditative pleasure.
DNA that greatly exceeded the minimum requirement gave birth to bulletproof specimens, especially among the large carnivores, the ones that already made visitors tremble before even leaving their enclosure.
Life Always Finds a Way... And Prey
The game offered a total of 25 species divided into four main categories. We always loved setting up quiet zones with small, easygoing herbivores, right next to park stars like the Brachiosaurus or the Triceratops. On the carnivore side, the tension inevitably went up a notch : impossible to manage without high security enclosures to contain a Tyrannosaurus or a Spinosaurus. And sometimes, we even had fun mixing species together, just to experience that primal instinct of a predator hunting its prey live.
Designing your island before unleashing the beasts
Before even talking about dinosaurs, everything was decided on an untouched island : terrain size, topography, presence of rivers or not. These initial choices then dictated the entire layout of the future park, from the first administrative buildings to the massive panoramic enclosures. The park map, updated in real time, remained the ultimate reference tool to spot areas to develop, visitor traffic flow and strategic locations for upcoming attractions.
When Everything Goes Completely Off the Rails
Everything often went wonderfully well : visitors enjoyed their 4x4 or balloon rides, totally thrilled. And then, without warning, tragedy struck. Diseases, and notably the famous dinosaur flu, showed up unannounced. You then had to jump into the helicopter and pull out the sniper rifle to administer vaccines in a total emergency, sometimes mid-flight over a highly uncooperative Tyrannosaurus.
⚠️ A starving or cramped carnivore always ended up breaking its fences to roam freely through the park. You really wanted to have built sturdy shelters beforehand : the general alarm would sound, and everyone would run to take cover before it turned into a bloodbath for the unluckiest tourists.
These same bunkers also saved the day during tornadoes, capable of sweeping an entire map and turning a simple visit into total chaos, flying visitors included.
Meanwhile, and even in the midst of a crisis, the dig teams kept up their field work : each local site remained a potential source of new fossils, meaning new cash flow that proved incredibly useful for rebuilding after a tornado passed through.
The Rest of the Brave and the Modern Legacy
Once the ten missions of the game were completed, we unlocked the legendary Site B mode. This mode allowed you to generate a totally wild island, without visitors or fences, populated by 60 dinosaurs immune to stress and disease. All that was left to do was sit back and watch life peacefully reclaim its rights, to the sound of the music composed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Seeing the game in motion
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis was exactly that : a highly unique balance between a soothing side, observing wildlife prosper in the meadows, and a much more tragic aspect, when nature brutally took back its rights. We replayed this game dozens of times back in the day, and it still holds a special place in our gaming memories.
💬 Today, in 2026, looking back visually at Jurassic Park Operation Genesis requires a bit of indulgence. The Jurassic World Evolution games, developed by Frontier since 2018 and enriched by sequels in 2021 and 2025, took the concept almost to the letter and completely sublimated it : more comprehensive, infinitely sharper technically and so much richer in content that our old hit almost looks basic in hindsight.
