BlizzCon 2026 : An Evening of Empty Promises and Recycled Nostalgia

Hey everyone. I am going to be completely straightforward here : I watched BlizzCon 2026 last night, and I was not disappointed. Or rather, my worst expectations were met. I have known Blizzard for years, I play their games, I defend their universes. This is exactly why I can no longer sit back and quietly swallow what they serve us now during every annual showcase. I know I am swimming completely against the current of many sites that blindly praise everything coming out of this company. Someone has to say it, so it might as well be me.

🕹️ The 3 key takeaways from this article :

  1. BlizzCon 2026 boiled down to distant announcements (2029, 2030), already known content, and a completely flat atmosphere from the very first minute.
  2. Warcraft III Forsaken is being sold for 30 dollars to players who already bought the game twice, featuring content entirely created by the community.
  3. Blizzard's only real successes remain their remasters : Diablo II, Warcraft I and II, and now the Definitive Edition graphic patch for Warcraft III.

A Flat Atmosphere From the Very First Word

Johanna Faries and the "Unbelievable Energy" of Emptiness

The evening kicks off, and you can already feel it is going to be a long ride. The speakers, whoever they were, completely failed to hype up the crowd. Between the forced jokes, poorly timed fake laughs, and those incredibly awkward moments waiting for applause that never comes, the overall vibe in the room was painfully average. We did not even have to wait an hour for that feeling to settle in.

Right from the entrance of the new president Johanna Faries, who recently replaced Robert Kotick, her opening line "Hello BlizzCon 2026, unbelievable energy right here" instantly set the wrong mood. Zero energy, zero passion. She rushed through her text at lightning speed, exactly like every other presenter after her. A long corporate script recited in front of an audience expecting something genuinely exciting.

💾 I remember a time when BlizzCons gave you actual goosebumps. The announcement of Diablo III in 2008, the reveal of StarCraft II... Moments that made you jump out of your chair. Last night, people were just scrolling on their phones.

The Announcements : Reheated Leftovers in a Fancy Gift Box

Heroes of the Storm, Diablo, StarCraft : The Bare Minimum Parade

Let us talk about the actual announcements, because that is why we tuned in. The night opens with Heroes of the Storm and the reveal of a new hero : Xal'atath. Great. Other studios would have slipped this into a weekly patch note, we will take it anyway. We quickly switch over to Diablo, getting an animated series in partnership with Netflix. Absolutely no extra details. Thank you, next.

We then move on to StarCraft, with the "mind-blowing" announcement of an FPS set in the franchise universe, where we will play as a trooper. See you in 2030. Quick clarification : rumors about this have been floating around for two years. Blizzard is selling us a two-year-old leak as the big exclusive scoop of the night. It is perhaps the only "innovation" of the event, though this trailer makes it impossible to say anything solid about it.

Diablo V in 2029 : Celebrating 30 Years With an Empty Trailer

The Exact Same Speech, Recycled for the Third Time

We circle back to Diablo, since it is the 30th anniversary of the franchise after all. How does Blizzard celebrate this milestone ? With a trailer and an attempt to build hype for a game coming out in 2029 : Diablo V. Guess what they pulled out for the speech ? The exact same script they squeezed dry for Diablo III and Diablo IV : "It will truly feel like Diablo II". This trailer, devoid of both gameplay and substance, will be forgotten by tomorrow. As a little treat, we also get a new class for Diablo IV : the Amazon. I honestly do not even know what to say anymore. This anniversary is a massive failure.

⚠️ If you spent any time on Path of Exile 2 these past few months, you will painfully understand how far behind the Diablo franchise has fallen. The scam is real.

Hearthstone, Overwatch and WoW : Same Recipes, Same Results

WoW Forever and the Return of the Broken Record

Hearthstone gets away with a new class announced as if it were the revelation of the century. It is definitely not. Overwatch received a new hero, Breakout, showcased in a rather polished French trailer, which is worth noting.

On the World of Warcraft side, we learn that The Last Titan is coming in 2027. Nothing crazy. They serve up the Vanilla trailer again to strike the nostalgia chord one more time, they "reveal" WoW Classic+ that absolutely everyone has been expecting for ages, and the grand WoW finale is called WoW Forever, presented as a promising new version that looks fundamentally identical to what we already know.

💬 Between the modded private servers facing legal threats and the heavy return of subscriptions, WoW will leave a bitter taste in your mouth, no matter which version you choose to play.

Warcraft III Forsaken : 30 Bucks for Community Content

The Silent Scandal of the Evening

We wrap things up with Warcraft III Forsaken, or "Rescammed" as the internet is already calling it. Not a single word about the slow, agonizing death of this game, left completely abandoned for years despite its status as an absolute monument of the early 2000s. The big reveal ? A new campaign. In reality : a pre-campaign consisting of 4 scenarios plus an RPG-style section. The cherry on top is that these maps and scenarios were created by... the community. Great job, champions.

Did you buy Warcraft III back in the day ? Did you then buy Warcraft III Reforged despite the broken promises of modern graphics and serious post-launch support ? Did you think you would get the next campaign for free ? Ahahahah. Time to swipe that card again : 30 dollars, please. It is genuinely sickening.

I would still like to end this chapter on a sincerely positive note : the Definitive Edition graphical patch. It finally transforms Warcraft III into what it should have been, maybe even back in 2002. The game looks beautiful, respects the lore perfectly, and truly aligns with Warcraft I and Warcraft II. I tested it myself, and the art direction is genuinely convincing this time around. We will have to see if the unit readability holds up during massive fights at 300 APM, but the visual upgrade is finally here.

35 Years of Passion Only to Watch a Legend Fade Away

It Is Not the Same Company Anymore

I will be completely transparent about why this article is so unforgiving. I am not here just to blindly bash Blizzard. I played Warcraft I, II, III, StarCraft I and II, The Lost Vikings, Diablo I, II, III, IV. Their products have literally been a part of my life for 30 to 35 years. For those of us in our forties, Blizzard meant groundbreaking games, immersive universes, strong artistic choices, memorable LAN parties, a global adventure of rare intensity.

💾 Pulling all-nighters on Warcraft II over Battle.net with the sound of a 56K modem in the background. Spending afternoons grinding Diablo II with friends. StarCraft LAN parties with 8 players crammed into the same room. Back in that era, Blizzard was a true creative powerhouse. Today, I do not see a single trace of that left.

To me, Blizzard, much like many corporations that grew too massive and fell into the hands of greedy shareholders, no longer belongs to the noble gaming landscape. They have become nothing more than cash grabs. The games have lost their quality, you can see it, everyone knows it, and they know it themselves. There is a very good reason why every BlizzCon showcase eventually relies on nostalgia for older games just to sell their future products.

Diablo III was a fail. Diablo IV never truly broke through. Warcraft III Reforged will remain a permanent stain on video game history. StarCraft II has been left to rot. And now they want us to drop another 30 dollars for a community-made campaign in Warcraft III ? No thanks, we have learned our lesson.

The only true positives, which I have already discussed honestly here on LBC, are the successful remasters : Diablo II Resurrected, Warcraft I and II Remastered, and now the Definitive Edition patch for Warcraft III. Those specific teams actually know what they are doing. As for the rest, ever since Bobby Kotick took over as CEO of Activision Blizzard in 2008, the staff has changed, the goals have changed, the games have changed, and Blizzard's aura has completely faded. This is just not the same company anymore. It has absolutely nothing in common with what it used to be.

My goal was not to put them on a witch trial. I know my perspective goes against a large portion of what you will find online right now. I also deeply feel that I am not the only one who has opened their eyes to this reality. We will happily turn to the indie scene, or towards competitors who actually want to give you an experience rather than just taking your money. It is entirely up to you to make your own choices with a clear conscience.

What about you, how did you feel watching this BlizzCon 2026 ? Are you still a hardcore fan, or have you definitely moved on to something else ? Let me know in the comments right below !

FAQ : BlizzCon 2026 and the State of Blizzard

When is Diablo V coming out ?

Diablo V was officially announced at BlizzCon 2026 with a scheduled release in 2029. Absolutely no gameplay was shown at this stage, only a cinematic trailer. The speech delivered by Blizzard copies word-for-word the exact same marketing pitch used during the launches of Diablo III and Diablo IV.

What is Warcraft III Forsaken and why is everyone so angry about it ?

Warcraft III Forsaken is a new expansion announced during BlizzCon 2026, featuring a pre-campaign of 4 scenarios created entirely by the community, along with an RPG mode. It is priced at 30 dollars, even for players who already purchased the original Warcraft III and Warcraft III Reforged, with absolutely no discount or commercial goodwill from Blizzard.

What exactly is the StarCraft FPS ?

It is a first-person shooter set in the StarCraft universe, announced for 2030. The player will take on the role of a trooper. This announcement has actually been circulating in gaming circles for at least two years. The trailer shown at BlizzCon 2026 reveals zero concrete gameplay elements.

WoW Classic+ and WoW Forever, what is the difference ?

WoW Classic+ is an enriched version of the original classic WoW, adding new content while strictly preserving the old-school experience. WoW Forever is pitched as a continuous, evolving version of the game designed for the long term, though its exact framework remains extremely vague at this point.

Is it still worth playing Blizzard games in 2026 ?

The remasters remain incredibly solid experiences : Diablo II Resurrected, Warcraft I and II Remastered, and the brand-new Definitive Edition patch for Warcraft III absolutely deserve your attention. As for any new productions, extreme caution is clearly required : wait for the reviews, read objective feedback, and absolutely never pre-order.
