RAM : The Alert That Will Crash Gaming Budgets

On the Campus, we love to share beautiful stories, cool games, and all those things that bring back great memories. But tonight…. Tonight the situation is serious ! You might have already noticed while browsing Amazon or Newegg, the prices for random access memory are skyrocketing, and the situation is not going to improve anytime soon. Indeed, a global RAM shortage is taking hold, and all sources agree : the consumer market is on a collision course with explosive industrial demand, and the result is simple :

  • Confirmed price hike of +40 to +60% on certain models
  • A major supplier leaving the market
  • Entire production shifting toward AI and data centers

The surge is already here, and apparently, we are only at the beginning…

Data Centers are extremely power-hungry...

Why Are Prices Going Up ?

There are several reasons for this :

First, the main manufacturers (Samsung, Hynix, and Micron) are now focusing their production lines on HBM memory, essential for AI GPUs and servers. In fact, AI is literally consuming global production. In other words, producing a stick of RAM is less profitable than a server or AI memory module.

Then, the blow we really didn't need : Micron confirmed the complete shutdown of its Crucial consumer line, planned for the first half of 2026. You definitely know Crucial if you have ever ordered or built a PC yourself. Until now, it offered a great quality-to-price ratio that many gamers loved.

This withdrawal from the consumer market is strategic : the group prefers to refocus its capacity on artificial intelligence, which is much more profitable. Less competition means reduced production, which mechanically leads to higher prices.

Finally, manufacturers refuse to increase production. According to several global analysts, Samsung and SK Hynix do not want to increase volumes. Why ? Because they are benefiting from a market under tension : Producing more would lower prices, while producing less maintains margins. A brutal industrial choice, but economically effective. They also struggle to anticipate the future of AI, as some speculate on an "AI bubble" burst. Today, the market is in full swing… but what about tomorrow ? If manufacturers launched massive production today and AI giants suddenly decided to scale back, it could lead to unsellable stock.

Conclusion : What Should You Do Now ?

The situation is clear : the industry has chosen AI. The artificial shortage strategy, combined with the elimination of a key player like Crucial, means that RAM prices will not return to "normal" for several years.

If you were thinking about upgrading your machine next year, or building a new rig for upcoming demanding games... don't wait. Monitor the second-hand market, check international retailers, and consider buying sooner rather than later if you're planning for 2026.

So, if you don't know what to put under the tree for Christmas yet... maybe think about that little stick of memory, because it might soon be worth its weight in gold.
