Season 2 Ends, and the Future of the Franchise Might Lie with the Fans

The final curtain fell yesterday. Episode 8 has just concluded Fallout Season 2 and the overall feeling is quite positive. It is visually stunning, the easter eggs are everywhere, and the respect for the lore (especially the New Vegas arc) is a joy to behold. Characters like Lucy or Cooper (The Ghoul) remain compelling, and the 40s/50s soundscape plunges us straight into the atmosphere.

But let’s be honest : not much actually happened. We are teased for Season 3, the groundwork is laid, but we are left wanting more. This is the plague of modern series : 8 episodes is short. Soon, we’ll move to 6, and we’ll barely have time to say "War never changes" before the credits roll. (wait, do 6-episode seasons already exist ?) We also would have loved a darker, grittier tone, reminiscent of what was done in the 70s and 80s. Today, everything feels a bit too clean, even if the dark humor saves the day. We are now waiting for the series to finally take on a grander scale. So, a solid 7/10 from me, but feel free to form your own opinion !

Catch-Up Session : Season 1 is FREE !

For those who have been living in a Vault without power for the past few months : wake up ! Season 1 is currently available to watch for free on YouTube. It is the perfect time to understand why everyone is raving about Lucy and Maximus. Be careful though, you have until February 12 to binge-watch all 8 episodes. After that, it will be too late.

Fallout : Bakersfield - The Surprise Hit No One Saw Coming

A Mod That Resurrects the Original Fallout

If you are still hungry for Fallout, turn your eyes toward Fallout : Bakersfield. For those who, like me, played Fallout 1 and 2 to death, this project is a pure fantasy. Alexander "Red888guns" Berezin (already behind the excellent Sonora and Olympus 2207 mods) is achieving a masterstroke : porting part of the original 1997 Fallout into the DOOM engine (GZDoom).

The official teaser for Fallout : Bakersfield

A Total Conversion Packed with Detail

We are talking about a total conversion here. The project revives Necropolis, the city of ghouls, in an FPS view. What stands out immediately is the obsessive attention to detail : the environments, enemy sprites, rusted weapons... everything is there, faithfully recreated. Development anecdotes show an incredible love for retro gaming :

  • Hybrid gameplay : They managed to integrate the original Fallout hit-chance system. Yes, you can miss a target at point-blank range with a 90% success rate, all within a fast-paced shooter engine.
  • Old School HUD : At the bottom of the screen, your character’s head degrades or heals in real-time based on your health, exactly like in DOOM or the very first Wolfenstein (PC).
  • Technical prowess : The GZDoom engine is pushed to its limits with dynamic lighting and melee combat animations (especially with the knife) that are demonically smooth.
Gameplay preview : Necropolis in FPS view

Some might wonder if Fallout 3 should have looked like this back in the day. It is a legitimate question. In any case, the project is about 60% complete (80% for environments) and is aiming for a 2027 release. I am honestly very excited to get my hands on it. It is the kind of initiative that proves fan passion can sometimes surpass the productions of major studios.

Wanting Always More : Lore and Advice

If after all that you are still hungry for radiation, we have just what you need. If you are new to the franchise or want to replay the games but don’t know where to start, we have the complete guide for you. I give you my personal priority order to discover the saga without getting lost in the Wasteland.

At the end of the article, you will also find the link to the YouTube channel of the person who is, in my opinion, the best French-speaking Fallout specialist. It is the ultimate reference for simplifying the lore and understanding every detail of this universe.

Until Season 3, take it easy on the Buffout, Mentats, Jet, and Psycho, and everything will be fine !
