State of Decay 3 : The Multiplayer Truly Changes the Game
We are sticking with State of Decay 3 today, because it is making serious waves right now and for good reason. After the 72 minutes of gameplay revealed a few days ago, we just got fresh intel on community management, base building, and most importantly, all the multiplayer overhaul details. And honestly, this looks incredibly promising, because it is going to completely change how we play. Up until now, I felt State of Decay 3 looked a bit too similar to the second game, and this reveals a genuine drive to innovate, particularly the ability to roam the map solo while friends handle their own business elsewhere. This feels like a fantastic direction for the franchise.
A Considerably More Ambitious Co-op Mode
Players Are No Longer Glued Together
Brian Menard, who got his hands on an alpha build through the player council, focused heavily on the multiplayer mechanics this time around. According to his breakdown, Undead Labs completely redesigned the co-op experience to fix the main flaws of State of Decay 2.
In State of Decay 3, co-op will unite up to 4 players in a genuinely shared world. The system looks entirely different from the second installment, which forced everyone to stay tethered to the host. The massive game-changer is the total removal of this proximity limit : every single player can travel anywhere on the map, with absolutely zero distance restrictions.
💾 We all remember those frustrating co-op sessions where we had to group up to avoid losing the split-screen or getting teleported right next to a buddy. State of Decay 2 suffered from this, and Undead Labs clearly identified the issue.
In practice, a squad can perfectly divide up the tasks :
- One player stays at the base to craft gear or manage the community
- Another goes out to clear an infestation
- A third explores buildings to scavenge for loot
- A fourth heads off to complete missions on the opposite side of the map
This freedom of movement will truly shine with the new map, which is announced to be roughly 4 times larger than the ones in State of Decay 2. Brian Menard even believes it might feel vastly bigger once in-game : an official comparison shows that multiple Meagher Valley maps can easily fit inside the State of Decay 3 map.
A Community Truly Shared Among Players
One Single Supply Locker, One Community for Everyone
The multiplayer framework also evolves deeply on another front. Unlike State of Decay 2, players will no longer simply join a friend's game while keeping their own community entirely separate. All participants will now share the exact same community, the same resources, and the same supply locker. Anyone can drop in or out of the session freely, without ever blocking the group's progression.
Brian Menard summarizes the main additions :
- A shared community supporting up to 4 players
- A unified resource pool and supply locker
- Survivors that can be swapped freely between players
- Resources, loot, and vehicles that transfer seamlessly
- The ability to keep playing even when a party member disconnects
The game will run on dedicated servers, providing a stable backbone while ensuring a deeply private experience. We are definitely talking about an intimate co-op adventure tailored for friends, elevated by a completely new level of freedom and fluidity.
Up to 3 Bases and 36 Playable Survivors
Personal Bases or Shared Command : It Is Up to You
In another major shift, State of Decay 3 will allow you to develop up to 3 bases for a single community. Each one can house 12 survivors, bringing the total to an impressive 36 playable characters. Every base can be specialized to fit the group's specific needs, for example :
- A base dedicated entirely to ammo and explosives
- Another focused on harvesting food and water
- A third specializing in fuel production
💡 Tip : players can decide to let everyone manage their own base and survivors, or choose to pool absolutely everything together. Brian Menard even mentions "house rules," since the game itself will impose no strict operational limits on the squad.
You will also be able to trade survivors so everyone can build the community exactly as they envision. And for those who prefer a more traditional experience, you are free to skip this multi-base management entirely : you can always stick to a single base and an intimate community of 6 to 10 survivors, whether playing solo or in co-op.
Our Takeaway, and What Awaits Us in 2027
The alpha phase of State of Decay 3 gives Brian Menard the opportunity to bring us a massive chunk of gameplay video, reassuring fans on the technical side (keeping in mind this is an early build facing fierce competition in the survival genre) while heavily promoting the immense promises of the co-op mode. This third installment aims to break completely free from all the frustrating restrictions of the second game, which, to its absolute credit, still enjoyed immense popularity and incredible post-launch support.
🕹️ To summarize the roadmap : absolutely no proximity limits between players, zero task restrictions, no host tethering (the session continues even if others disconnect), and everything is shared regarding management, from vital resources to vehicles.
The ultimate focus is absolute freedom. The developers emphasize that the only rules will be the ones players choose for themselves, all while maintaining an internal balance that allows a pure solo player to thrive by peacefully managing a single base.
As a reminder, State of Decay 3 is slated for 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC via Steam and the Xbox app. The game will be available on day one in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, while also benefiting from the brilliant Xbox Play Anywhere program. We can easily imagine, much like the previous title, that the launch will just be the beginning of a massive content journey.
To say I am excited would be an understatement ; I am incredibly hyped for this one, despite the recent worrying news coming out of the Xbox camp.
By the way, if you want to dive into that darker topic, we detailed it all in our article on the corporate crisis shaking Xbox and the looming threats over the Undead Labs studio.
