Windrose : The Future Heavyweight of Pirate Survival Sets Sail Next Week

One and a half million wishlists. When a game reaches this figure before even releasing its final version, you know it's no longer just a project : it's an event. Windrose, the pirate survival-adventure from Windrose Crew published by Pocketpair (yes, the ones behind Palworld), lifts anchor on April 14, 2026 in early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store. And after a Steam Next Fest that attracted over 850,000 players to the demo alone, it's safe to say expectations are sky-high.

Windrose : The Lore, or How Revenge Becomes a Cosmic War

When Blackbeard Picks a Fight

It all begins with an insult. We are in the 18th century, in an alternative version of the Golden Age of Piracy. You are a freelance captain betrayed and abandoned after a mission gone wrong. Your mistake was having the audacity to cross blades with the legendary Blackbeard himself. The result came quickly : you find yourself on the streets, without a crew, without a ship, without anything. That’s where the adventure begins.

What starts as a story of personal survival and well-deserved revenge quickly takes on a whole new dimension. As you progress, you'll find yourself caught in a conflict that far exceeds your initial quarrel : empire rivalries, pirate clans with oversized ambitions, and above all, dark supernatural powers lurking on the horizon. The developers have tucked extraordinary bosses into cursed corners, like a mysterious High Priestess lurking in corrupted marshes. The plot, which starts with your feet in the mud, gradually transforms into a large-scale fantasy epic.

💾 Formerly known as Crosswind, the project was renamed and showcased at the PC Gaming Show : Most Wanted 2025. A rebirth that earned it explosive visibility, before joining the Triple-i Initiative Showcase 2026 for the official release date announcement.

Windrose Gameplay : The Devil is in the Details

On Land : A Pirate Souls-like, and it's Serious

Do you play Sea of Thieves ? If so, you might feel a bit out of your element. Once you set foot on land, Windrose adopts a souls-lite combat style that demands discipline : parrying, dodging, and reading enemy patterns. You have a varied arsenal at your disposal, from sabers and maces to muskets, and every confrontation requires constant attention. The bosses are designed around this challenge and do not forgive mistakes.

Character progression is handled via a system of skill points, talents, and armor sets, allowing for a truly personalized build. Consumable management also enters the equation : food, potions, and oils offer powerful buffs but must be managed carefully. On the survival side, you must gather resources, build and upgrade your base, grow your colony, and recruit NPCs to speed up production. This construction-management aspect gives the game its long-term depth.

At Sea : Naval Battles, Boarding, and Co-op

The heart of the show remains, of course, navigation and naval combat. The ship-to-shore transition is seamless, which is a technical feat that should significantly enhance immersion. You choose your vessel based on your style : the ultra-maneuverable ketch, the versatile brig, or the tanky frigate. Three new ships are available right at the early access launch.

The big feature requested by demo players is finally here : co-op naval battles. A crew can share control of the ship's weaponry, coordinate cannon broadsides, manage tactical repositioning, and launch manual boarding actions after pummelling the enemy. Up to four players in co-op at launch, with player-hosted or dedicated servers. The devs are even testing an 8-player expansion for crews who really want to rumble.

Exploration : Procedural + Handcrafted = The Right Recipe

The world of Windrose unfolds across three distinct biomes, procedurally generated so that every playthrough is different. But to avoid the "everything looks the same" syndrome, the developers have integrated over 100 dungeons, quests, shipwrecks, temples, and abandoned camps designed entirely by hand. This mix should guarantee both replay value and the feeling of discovering something truly unique with every outing. The main campaign duration is estimated between 50 and 70 hours, depending on your playstyle. For Early Access, that sounds quite promising.

Exploration is at the core of the experience : from burning wrecks to loot to mysterious caves to map out, the world is full of surprises.

System Requirements and Price : What to Know Before Buying

The Tech That Delivers

Windrose runs on Unreal Engine 5, and it shows. The recommended specs are a clear indicator that the game has real technical ambitions, particularly in maintaining fluid, loading-free sea-to-land transitions. Here is the essential info :

  • RAM : 16 GB minimum for solo or co-op play. If you're hosting your own server, plan for 32 GB.
  • Storage : An SSD is highly recommended to ensure smooth transitions between zones.
  • Note : Requirements are not yet finalized at this stage of early access ; optimizations are planned throughout development.

💡 Tip : If you try the demo available on Steam before launch, you’ll unlock an exclusive spyglass reserved for early access players. A free cosmetic for the first ones aboard.

How Much Does It Cost and Where to Buy ?

Windrose "should" be available for around 29.99 USD on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Stove. For those who want to support development, a Supporter Bundle at 39.99 USD includes the game, the full soundtrack (including shanties recorded by Seán Dagher), and exclusive wallpapers. It’s one of the best-positioned early access games in terms of content/price ratio for this type of production.

🕹️ Roadmap : Windrose Crew estimates that early access will last between 1.5 and 2.5 years before version 1.0. The plan includes about 50 % additional content : new biomes, bosses, enemies, ships, loot, and a complete narrative conclusion.

Little Big Campus Verdict : To Sail or Not to Sail on April 14 ?

Let’s be honest with you : if you’re coming from Sea of Thieves Season 19 looking for the same accessible and friendly sandbox, Windrose is definitely a different breed. We’re looking at something much more demanding, closer in spirit to an action survival-RPG with a real difficulty curve. Veterans of survival genres like Valheim or Enshrouded should feel right at home ; others might need an adjustment period.

What really excites us, besides bringing a fresh game centered on piracy, is the ambition of the proposal : over 50 hours of content at launch, a deep progression system, true naval co-op, and a universe that blends authentic history with fantasy. Pocketpair as a publisher is also a strong signal for long-term support. We plan to check it out on Twitch starting the 14th to see if the promise holds. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaar !
