It is finally here. Announced yesterday on social media, Lucasfilm has at last broken the silence by unveiling the first trailer for Star Wars : Maul – Shadow Lord. A video of less than two minutes that hits like a lightsaber strike and confirms what we all suspected : the great Dave Filoni is not done with the tragic fate of the former Sith Lord.
« Chains can be broken »
The tone is set : « Chains can be broken. Empires can be destroyed ». Scheduled for April 6, 2026, on Disney +, this 10-episode animated series is set during that pivotal and dark period just one year after the end of The Clone Wars. We find a weakened but more dangerous than ever Maul, seeking to rebuild his criminal empire while navigating a galaxy now crushed under the boot of the Galactic Empire.
What strikes immediately is the visual evolution. While it stays true to the stylistic lineage of The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, the production has pushed the boundaries to the max. Dave Filoni describes an « extreme style », while Sam Witwer (who once again lends his legendary voice to the character) speaks of an animation that is « sharper, more angular, and more dangerous ». The play of red and purple shadows promises an atmosphere of « pictorial malice » that is absolutely sublime.
💾 Sam Witwer has voiced Maul since The Clone Wars in 2008. His vocal performance literally brought the character back to life after his brief appearance in The Phantom Menace. A loyalty that truly pays off !
Between legacy and new threats
Beyond Maul, the trailer introduces us to his new Twi'lek apprentice, Devon Izara (voiced by Gideon Adlon), whose appearance is already fueling theories about a potential link to the famous Darth Talon from the Expanded Universe. Facing them, the unlikely duo of police captain Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura) and his droid partner 2B0T (Richard Ayoade) promises to bring a fresh dynamic to the narrative.
The series will not focus solely on pure action. It will explore the complex psychology of a Maul who sees his sworn enemy, the Jedi Order, destroyed not by his hand, but by that of his former master Palpatine. A very dark tone is therefore expected. Sam Witwer compares Maul to a « Joker » who has to survive the death of Batman. An introspection that promises to be visceral, with no desire for redemption for the character.
The character of Maul embodies the tragedy of the betrayed Sith, condemned to wander in a galaxy that has forgotten even his name. A shadow that refuses to fade away.
See you in the Spring
With a broadcast schedule of two episodes per week, concluding in a grand finale on May 4, Star Wars Day, the wait is going to be long. This series seems to be the passion project that Maul has deserved for a long time to bridge the gap between his defeat on Mandalore and his exile on Malachor. We can’t wait for April to see the shadow rise !
