The 2026 Battle of the Seas
This is a coincidence that doesn't lie. While Windrose, the long-awaited pirate survival game, is smashing records with over one million copies sold and 200,000 concurrent players since its Early Access launch on April 14, Ubisoft is preparing to set sail with one of the most anticipated remakes of the decade : Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. Personally, I’ve played through Black Flag twice. So, I’m going to explain why this remake hits me so hard, and why you should pay very close attention to it. To dive deeper into Windrose, we’ve written a full article on its Early Access launch that I highly encourage you to check out.
Windrose, or How 2026 Declared Naval Warfare
Before we talk about the remake, we absolutely must contextualize this moment. Windrose, developed by Kraken Express and published by Pocketpair Publishing, is the pirate survival game many have been waiting years for. At $29.99 on Steam (with a 10 % launch discount), it shattered all expectations. Over 1.5 million wishlists before release, a demo tested by 850,000 players in February, and "Very Positive" reviews in almost every language since day one.
What Windrose offers is a perfectly balanced cocktail : survival and crafting like Valheim, naval combat with boarding and seamless land-to-sea transitions, base and fort building, NPC recruitment, and up to 8 players in co-op. Comparisons to Black Flag often pop up in Steam reviews, and that’s no coincidence. The gaming community is clearly hungry for ambitious pirate adventures. And Ubisoft knows exactly what players want.
💾 A bit of history : Released in 2013, Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag left a mark with its much freer and more contemplative approach than other entries in the franchise. Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, already announced it back in June 2024 : "Players can expect some remakes that will allow us to revisit some of the games we created in the past and modernize them." Black Flag was the most obvious candidate.
Analysis, Mechanics, and Cultural Impact
Black Flag Resynced : The Industry’s Worst-Kept Secret
The Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced project has definitely been one of the worst-protected secrets in video game history. It all started last March when Ubisoft unveiled a first official concept art, confirming the remake's existence. Jean Guesdon, content lead at Ubisoft, even posted a blog entry (since deleted) that left no room for doubt : "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. Except in this specific case, some rumors carry a bit more weight. Keep your spyglass trained on the horizon." And that’s putting it lightly.
The official Resynced name then leaked in December via the European PEGI classification system. Shortly after, Ubisoft Connect briefly displayed a dedicated page with brand-new artwork featuring Edward Kenway, unequivocally confirming the return of the iconic protagonist. To top it all off, journalist Tom Henderson, renowned for his reliability, revealed that media outlets and content creators participated in a private 30-minute presentation on April 16, with an embargo apparently set around April 23.
July 9, 2026, in the Crosshairs
According to several consistent sources, including Insider Gaming, the release date for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is reportedly set for July 9, 2026. Ubisoft hasn't officially confirmed it as of this writing, but all signs point in that direction. The Ubisoft Connect leak also mentioned access included for Ubisoft+ Premium subscribers at launch, confirming the publisher's strategy to keep feeding its subscription service with major day-one titles.
A summer launch is unusual for a project of this scale. Ubisoft seems to want to occupy a strategic window with little direct competition, avoiding the packed fall AAA release schedule. A calculated risk, then, which will come with a full-price release. This pricing choice will undoubtedly reignite the debate over the legitimacy of remakes for relatively recent titles. If the overhaul lives up to descriptions, Ubisoft will have its arguments.
⚠️ Keep in mind : None of this information has been officially confirmed by Ubisoft yet. Available details come from leaks, non-public press presentations, and third-party sources, even reputable ones. So, we remain in the realm of highly probable, but not yet certain. Wait for the official reveal before reaching for your wallet.
A True Remake, Built from the Ground Up
This is the crucial information. Black Flag Resynced is said to be a true remake, and the difference from a remaster is massive. While a remaster simply improves resolution and performance, a remake involves a deep technical and structural overhaul. Based on available info, the project reportedly uses the graphic engine of modern Assassin's Creed titles, representing a considerable generational leap. For a game built around navigation and maritime landscapes, this visual gain could radically transform the experience. The Caribbean in 2013 was already beautiful. In 2026, it could become absolutely breathtaking.
Tom Henderson also reassured fans on a crucial point : the remake will not be an RPG. Ubisoft reportedly made it clear during the presentation that it remains a character-driven solo adventure. For those who feared a shift toward Assassin's Creed Shadows mechanics, it’s a clear relief. We will find the single-player action-adventure that made the original a hit.
Estimated Release Date : July 9, 2026 (unofficial) | Price : Full price (included in Ubisoft+ Premium)
💡 What has leaked regarding content : according to available information, the remake will bring new crew members, never-before-seen officers, additional chapters to flesh out Edward Kenway’s life, and entirely reworked underwater exploration. There is even the possibility of having a pet on board (your choice of a cat or a monkey). On the other hand, the modern-day gameplay sections have reportedly been removed—a move that divides fans, though I personally don't mind.
Legacy and the Future of the Genre
My history with Black Flag : two runs, and a real connection
I’ll be straight with you : Black Flag was my first Assassin's Creed. A friend of mine, Zekkey, recommended it to me. So I dived in without really knowing the franchise (yes, I was late to the party). And it was a true delight from start to finish. Almost everything was great : the colors of the Caribbean seas, the islands to discover one by one, the naval battles against other renowned pirates, the need to improve your equipment and upgrade your ship, and the ability to own your own island and build structures on it. Not to mention the treasures to find and a truly well-crafted story with endearing characters. You really feel like you’re on the other side of the world, in another era, forming a crew and discovering it all.
Who hasn’t dreamed of taking to the ocean at the helm of a pirate ship, hearing their crew sing during calm weather, and being carried by epic battles ? Here, we have all of that. The island exploration is excellent : they are all unique, set in tropical forests, often with grandiose viewpoints, hidden camps, and real secrets to uncover. The stealth mechanics are also solid, though there’s a learning curve since getting spotted early on can cancel the mission immediately.
I’ll still be honest about the parts that annoyed me, because it’s never all sunshine and rainbows. The phases where the game pulls you out of the adventure to send you back to modern offices, going to some floor to do useless tasks... it really breaks the immersion. It’s all the more frustrating because the rest is so captivating. The other downside : there is "too much of everything." If you want to do every single side quest, you’re in for an eternity. But on the bright side, this appeals to everyone. Those who want to stay in the game as long as possible will always have something to do, while those who just want to follow the main story can ignore the smaller side quests. I still recommend doing some of them, as they add a lot to the lore and... your in-game wallet.
Freedom is absolute in Black Flag. You can wander wherever you want, whenever you want. It’s a pirate world that truly grabs you by the soul. LittleBigCampus
The remake arrives at the perfect time : piracy is back
The lightning success of Windrose is no accident. It reveals a massive and clearly unfulfilled demand for ambitious pirate games. Over a million copies sold in a few days, 200,000 concurrent players, very positive reviews in every language... The audience is there. And Ubisoft knows it. Bringing Edward Kenway back to the spotlight at this exact moment is a perfectly calibrated strategic decision.
For those looking to prepare for their return to the Caribbean, or simply ride the current wave of pirate hype while waiting for the remake, there’s a real selection of games in the genre. Here are a few I’ve tested and truly recommend.
Sea of Thieves : the best for playing with friends
I’ve spent countless hours on Sea of Thieves and honestly, what a blast. You find yourself on your own ship with your friends, and the game opens up completely. There are quests galore available on PVE servers to play quietly at your own pace, or PVP servers to let the helmsmen and gunners do the talking. Sinking enemy crews full of loot and collecting their treasures as they float to the surface is a feeling few games manage to replicate. What really hooked me is the continuous progression : updates are very frequent, adding mechanics, weapons, quests, and all sorts of improvements. Season 19 just arrived and is revolutionizing PVP. Available for $39.99 on the Windows Game Store, often on sale for $19.99, and you can also find keys at a reduced price.
Classics under $10 to immerse yourself in the era
Pirates of Black Cove for $9.99 on Steam : with a top-down view, you manage a crew, go on quests by ship and on land to recruit better pirates. The gameplay is simple and accessible, but there’s real depth in the progression. A long quest awaits you, shipmates.
Sid Meier's Pirates ! on GOG for $2.49 instead of $9.99. A legendary title that costs almost nothing today. You manage your ship from a top-down view on the seas, with a ton of missions to complete. Sword duels, romance, cannonades galore... A game that has aged with a lot of elegance and remains an absolute reference in the genre.
Tropico 2 : Pirate Cove in the Reloaded version on GOG for $1.35 instead of $5.45 right now. Here, you play as the pirate governor of an entire island. Building structures, managing crops, organizing trade, and sending warships to sea to bring back booty and captives... The atmosphere is great, the music is super catchy, and time flies. My very first pirate game, by the way.
Monkey Island : the point-and-click that started it all
You can't talk about piracy in video games without mentioning Monkey Island. A legendary point-and-click, full of humor, well-crafted puzzles, and unforgettable characters. It also received its own remaster, available for $9.75 on GOG. If you love pirate adventures that think outside the box, we even gave it a spot in our Top 5 best Point & Click games.
Legacy and the Future of the Genre
In the Assassin's Creed saga, Black Flag stands apart. Its blend of piracy, exploration, and storytelling has left a lasting impression on players in a way that few other entries have managed to match. Black Flag offered a freer, almost contemplative adventure at times, with a world that felt alive independently of the player. This uniqueness largely explains its cult status, still intact more than ten years after its release.
The overhaul with the modern Assassin's Creed graphic engine could radically transform the visual experience. If, on top of that, underwater exploration is entirely reworked, and narrative content is enriched with new characters and additional chapters, we are potentially looking at a game that surpasses the original while remaining faithful to its soul. That’s a rare feat.
🕹️ What the remake will keep : Edward Kenway as the protagonist, single-player action gameplay (no RPG mechanics), sailing and naval combat, and the freedom to explore the Caribbean. What’s changing : a modern graphic engine, enriched narrative content, reworked underwater exploration, new mechanics, and the removal of modern-day sequences. Sounds like a fair deal to me.
