Star Wars : The Ultimate Guide to Movies and Series

Following the departure of Kathleen Kennedy, it is time to look forward, as a new dawn rises over the galaxy driven by the new tandem of Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. Between imminent releases, projects in incubation, and ideas put on the shelf, here is the most complete report on the future of the franchise. From The Mandalorian & Grogu to the return of Rey, including animated series and mysteriously buried projects, let’s review what awaits us in this galaxy far, far away.

Confirmed Projects : The Immediate Future

The Mandalorian & Grogu (Theatrical)

Release Date : May 22, 2026
Director : Jon Favreau

This film marks the grand return of Star Wars to the big screen, a first since 2019. Originally planned as a Season 4, the project was transformed into a feature film to give the franchise back its event-level dimension. Filming wrapped at the end of 2024. We will find Din Djarin and his apprentice on a mission that should definitively link the plots of the Outer Rim to the growing threat of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Maul : Shadow Lord (Animated Series)

Release Date : Sometime in 2026
Showrunner : Sam Witwer (the iconic voice of Maul) is back on duty.

Set in the turbulent period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, this series explores how Maul survived and rebuilt his criminal empire (the Crimson Dawn) on a wild planet totally ignored by the Galactic Empire. It is a return to the character’s roots : dark, tactical, and ruthless.

Star Wars : Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi (Mini-Series)

Release Date : 2026
Studio : Production I.G. (Japan)

A direct sequel to the acclaimed short film from Visions Season 1. The story takes place centuries after the fall of the Jedi Order. Lightsabers have become forgotten relics. We follow the quest to gather the last Force users. The "Anime" visual style and the melancholic atmosphere promise a unique experience.

Star Wars : Starfighter (Theatrical)

Release Date : May 28, 2027
Team : Directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) starring Ryan Gosling.

Set 5 years after The Rise of Skywalker, this film moves away from the Skywalker saga to focus on pure space combat. Jonathan Tropper’s script is described as a standalone project. Filming in London in late 2025 revealed a tone closer to Rogue One, centered on the heroism of a new generation of elite pilots.

Ahsoka - Season 2 (Live-Action Series)

Status : Post-production

Dave Filoni confirmed that writing and filming are completed (October 2025). Following the Season 1 finale, Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren are stranded on Peridea. This Season 2 will explore the mysticism of the Mortis Gods and Thrawn's thunderous return to the main galaxy. Expected release late 2026.

In Active Development : The Next Wave

The Dave Filoni "Mando-Verse" Movie

This film is the culmination of 10 years of storytelling on Disney+. Filoni will bring together characters from The Mandalorian, Boba Fett, and Ahsoka for a monumental battle against the Imperial Remnant. It is the "Avengers" of Star Wars.

New Jedi Order (The Return of Rey)

Daisy Ridley reprises her role. The film takes place 15 years after Episode IX. Rey attempts to train a new generation of Jedi. The script went through several versions (Lindelof, Knight) before being taken over in 2025 by George Nolfi. The project is a strategic priority for Disney, despite the silence from Kennedy during her departure.

The Simon Kinberg Trilogy

Kinberg (X-Men, Rebels) is writing and producing a brand-new trilogy. A massive 70-page treatment was finalized in late 2025. It remains unknown if these are Episodes X-XI-XII or a completely new era, but the studio expects a first full script by March 2026.

On Hold or Status Unknown : The Uncertainty

The Hunt for Ben Solo

Pitched by Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh. An "incredible" script exists, but Disney hesitates to take this creative risk.

Dawn of the Jedi (James Mangold)

A "biblical" film about the origins of the Force 25,000 years before the main saga. Currently on the "back burner" to leave priority for the Mando-Verse.

Taika Waititi Star Wars

Announced in 2021, the director has still not delivered a final script as of early 2026. The project remains "alive" but with zero visibility.

Lando

Initially a series, the Glover brothers (Donald and Stephen) turned it into a movie. The project is waiting for a production slot.

Rogue Squadron (Patty Jenkins)

After multiple cancellations and delays, Kennedy mentioned a possible move to the series format. Status is unclear.

Cancelled or Dead : The Galaxy's Lost Archives

In Lucasfilm’s history, many projects were announced with fanfare before fading away, victims of strategic shifts or "creative differences." Here are those that have officially joined the Jakku junkyard :

Rangers of the New Republic : This series was meant to be the third pillar of the Mando-Verse alongside The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. Following Gina Carano's dismissal and scheduling issues, Lucasfilm decided to cancel the series to integrate its plots directly into other Mandalorian shows.

The Rian Johnson Trilogy : Announced even before the release of Episode VIII, this trilogy was meant to explore a totally new corner of the galaxy. Between the director’s busy schedule (Knives Out success) and the polarized reception of The Last Jedi, the project stayed in limbo before being definitively buried in early 2026.

The Kevin Feige Movie : The Marvel Universe mastermind was supposed to produce a Star Wars film with writer Michael Waldron (Loki). Despite fan excitement, the project was quietly cancelled. Officially, Feige is "too busy" with the MCU turnaround, but unofficially, the chemistry was never right with Lucasfilm’s leadership.

The Benioff & Weiss Films : The Game of Thrones creators were set to launch a new saga. They left the ship in 2019, officially to focus on their massive Netflix deal, but rumors point to overwhelming pressure from the fanbase after the controversial GoT ending.

The J.D. Dillard Project : The Devotion director was working on a mysterious film. The project was halted, with Dillard himself stating it was no longer in active development following the studio’s priority changes.

Star Wars : A Droid Story : Announced during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, this animated film was supposed to introduce a new hero guided by the legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO. Despite mixing Lucasfilm Animation and ILM talents, the project vanished from the radar, judged as a lower priority compared to New Republic stakes.

The Future of Star Wars : Between Recalibration and Major Events

As 2026 begins, Star Wars seems to be entering a phase of recalibration. The era of multiplying announcements to saturate the calendar seems over, giving way to a "major events" strategy. With the leadership transition at the studio, Disney’s goal seems clear : secure the brand with proven values like the Mando-Verse, while offering prestige breaks with stars like Ryan Gosling.

Between the technical mastery of the new team and this desire to reconnect with cinematic spectacle, the Force is searching for its new balance. We are moving from flow management to event management. For us, the fans, this might finally be the moment when every release becomes a true galactic event once again.
