2026 CPU Shortage : The Hardware Market Enters Turbulent Skies

If you were planning to build a custom rig or treat yourself to a new gaming laptop before the summer of 2026, I have some bad news for you : processors (CPUs) are entering a turbulence zone. With prices climbing by 15 to 30 % and delivery times jumping from two weeks to six months, the hardware market is turning into a battlefield. And guess who’s snatching up all the ammunition ? Once again, it’s Artificial Intelligence.

We thought we’d already faced the worst with RAM, but the nightmare continues. Foundries like Intel and AMD are making wealthy choices : why manufacture a €300 desktop processor when they can sell Xeon Clearwater Forest or EPYC Venice chips at a premium for supercomputers ?

The Heist Continues : After RAM, AI is Targeting Your Processor

Remember, I was already warning you last December about skyrocketing RAM prices and explaining that we shouldn't give in to violence. At the time, we saw Big Corp buying up all the stock to feed their servers.

Today, the situation isn't getting any better. This is what I call The AI Heist of the Century. If you haven't read this series yet, I suggest catching up with Part II and Part III. You’ll quickly understand that your PC has become a luxury for the Tech giants.

💾 We experienced the great GPU shortage during the COVID and crypto-mining era. Graphics cards were being snatched up at three times their price, nowhere to be found at retailers. We told ourselves it was an anomaly, an accident of history. Today, we realize it was just... the dress rehearsal.

Prices Up by 10 % to 30 % : A Cold Shower

What the field data shows

The figures coming back from the field (thanks to Nikkei Asia and assemblers like HP or Dell) are quite chilling. Since February 2026, the gap between manufacturer needs and actual deliveries has been abyssal.

  • Immediate Inflation : Intel and AMD have already warned that prices will increase in March and April 2026. We are talking about +10 to +15 % on average for standard x86 chips.
  • Laptops Suffering : At ASUS and Acer, the verdict is even heavier, with announced hikes of up to 30 % on certain laptop models.
  • Record Delays : Ordering a CPU today is like ordering designer furniture. We’ve gone from 15 days to 3 or even 6 months of waiting.

⚠️ Watch out : Even Intel’s new Arrow Lake Plus (Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Ultra 5 250K Plus), which were supposed to break the market with aggressive $199 and $299 pricing, risk being impossible to find at MSRP. Retailers will feast on the little stock available.

ARM Architecture : The Challenger Profiting from the Chaos

x86 vs ARM : understanding the duel at the summit

To understand why the cards are being reshuffled, you first have to grasp what ARM is. Until now, almost all your PCs ran on x86 architecture (the historical standard of Intel and AMD). It’s powerful, but it’s an energy pit that runs hot.

Conversely, ARM is the architecture you have in your smartphones : ultra-efficient, it consumes very little and barely heats up. Long judged "too light" for gaming or pro editing, it has made a giant leap. Today, ARM chips are capable of rivaling classic processors while offering record battery life.

🕹️ Faced with the void left by the Intel/AMD duo (too busy feeding AI), ARM is rushing into the breach. ASUS already announces that 30 % of its Copilot AI PCs run on ARM (up from 20 % in late 2025). This is where Qualcomm enters the stage with its Snapdragon X2 Plus and Elite chips. Meanwhile, we’re watching Nvidia as they prepare to launch their N1/N1X chips to try and settle the debate on laptops.

Qualcomm might very well become the ideal "Plan B" for all gamers and creators who don't want to wait until Christmas to change their machine.

Conclusion : Buy Now or Wait ?

Let’s be clear : the second quarter of 2026 is shaping up to be the worst time to buy. Volumes allocated to assemblers are in freefall. As a Dell executive put it : "Even with money, you can't get chips."

My advice on the Campus : if you still find stock at "normal" prices, don’t think twice. AI is an ogre devouring everything in its path : after hijacking RAM and GPUs, it’s now attacking the heart of our machines. Hardware is becoming a rare resource, almost a collector's item before it's even unboxed.

What do you think about this AI hegemony dictating the price of our passions ? One wonders if the future of gaming will boil down to ultra-optimized ARM consoles or all-Cloud, leaving luxury processors to the servers of multinational corporations... Let me know in the comments !
