The RAM Shortage : So, what do we do ?

For years, we lived the good life : we bought RAM like we bought bread, with the certainty that the following year, we would get double the power for the same price. It was almost automatic. But now, that beautiful curve has just broken. It’s not just about the stinging prices ; it's our entire little world of gamers that is changing, for a while at least. We talked about it together on Discord, wondering how we were going to take the hit... well, here we are. Between manufacturers going their own way and studios sweating buckets, the future looks... "sporty." Shall we take stock together ?

The "Betrayal" of Manufacturers : We Are No Longer the Favorites

Business is Business

For them (Nvidia and company), the calculation is cold : business is business. They are no longer going to mass-produce just to please us. Nvidia even plans to slow down production in early 2026. The reason ? AI. This greedy beast is eating up all the available GDDR7 and DDR5 memory before we can even catch a glimpse of it.

For foundries like Samsung, the gamer is no longer the VIP client ; they are the "supporting role." It’s infuriating to have our priority stolen by compute servers, but that is our reality today. We come after the "bigger fish."

SOS Developers : Time to Work on Optimization !

The Organized Panic of Studios

On the side of those who create our games, it’s organized panic. Take Swen Vincke (the boss of Larian) : he explains that it’s become a nightmare to predict if we, the players, will have enough RAM to run their future gems.

Before, they bet on the fact that our PCs would be monsters by the time the game was released. Today ? We just don't know anymore.

For heavyweights like the next Divinity or GTA VI, they will have to stop counting on raw power and relearn how to code "clean." Hunting down every single memory leak is becoming the baseline again. Maybe that's not such a bad thing, right ?

And Us ? We Adapt and Stay Alert !

Patience, Our New Skill

So, what do we do, as players ? We learn patience, plain and simple. It’s the perfect time to rediscover the indie scene. These games don’t require a nuclear power plant to run, and they remind us of the essentials : the joy of gaming isn’t measured in Gigabytes of RAM.

⚠️ A little warning between us : With the shortage, scams are coming out of the woodwork. Be extremely careful where you buy your gear. If the price seems too good to be true on a shady site, it’s probably a scam. We help each other, share good deals, and don't rush in headfirst !

💡 Tip : Stick to official retailers and check customer reviews before any purchase. If in doubt, ask the community for advice !

The Final Word : We Don't Give Up !

The future isn’t all dark ; it’s just different. We might rely less on technical overkill and more on pure dev talent. This crisis could very well force the industry to rethink its priorities and create games that are more optimized, more accessible, and ultimately... more interesting.

And you, what do you think of this shift ? Are you planning to hold on with your current config, or are you starting to save up ? Come discuss it on Discord ! We’re here to help each other, share optimization tips, and above all, play together on titles that don’t require a NASA machine. The door is wide open !
