The Weight of a 35-Pound CRT Monitor

If you had seen me in the late 90s, you would have crossed paths with me, my back breaking, carrying my massive 35-pound CRT monitor and my beige tower all the way to the trunk of the car. And believe me, I prayed at every speed bump for the machine to arrive in one piece at my friends' place. It was the blessed era of impromptu weekend LAN parties, where we pulled meters of crossover RJ-45 cables amidst soda bottles and bags of snacks.

On Little Big Campus, I had a genuine desire to reopen this great history book. The 1995-2000 period is my favorite playground, that golden age where the PC strategy game completely exploded. It is a pure joy for me to share these memories with you, whether it is to rekindle your own cybercafe nights or to pass this passion on to younger generations.

The DIY Era, Trackball Mice, and Burned CDs

The Ritual Before Even Launching a Game

Before even launching a game, playing on a PC back then was a serious ritual. We lent each other CD-ROMs in the middle or high school courtyard, we burned games onto 700 MB discs at the friend's house who was lucky enough to own a CD burner, and we hung out in cybercafes on Wednesday afternoons. At home, it was the reign of Windows 95 then 98, and we pushed our Pentium, Pentium II, or the very first AMD Athlon processors to their absolute limits.

Who hasn't spent ten minutes mid-game taking off the trapdoor under their mouse to scrape the dirt accumulated on the rollers? We organized entire snack breaks huddled two or three on the same office chair, passing the keyboard around to try and beat a mission on Dune or build our very first armies.

The Great Real-Time Leap : When Strategy Becomes Fury

A Completely Insane Technical and Creative Step Forward

The 1990-1995 period had already laid the classic foundations of the genre with the best PC strategy games of the time, and during the second half of the decade, I experienced a monumental slap in the face. Studios took a completely insane technical and creative step forward.

Real-time strategy games suddenly became nervous, fluid, and demanding. Gone were the sluggish unit selections and the trickle-down movements. I witnessed the arrival of on-the-fly group management, the first true 3D engines, titanic clashes involving hundreds of units, and epic soundtracks that still haunt me today. The AI was finally starting to make us sweat, and the storytelling immersed us in unforgettable campaigns.

The Table of Contents of Our Grand Retro Strategy Feature

The offering from this era is so rich that a single article would not be enough to pay it the tribute it deserves. We have therefore structured this feature into four main thematic axes. Explore the links below to dive into the categories that forged the glory of these founding years!

The Titans of Competition and Royal Warfare

These titles have carved their names in stone and laid the foundations of modern e-sports. Find our analysis of the sacred monsters of real-time combat. On the menu : the Age of Empires saga, the Command & Conquer franchise, the undisputed StarCraft, and the mythical Warcraft II.

The Perfect Alliance Between Strategy and Economic Management

For tacticians who love seeing life swarm on the screen. Here, building complex production chains and feeding your workers matters just as much as raising an army. Tactical Masterclasses and Legendary Heroes

A section dedicated to experiences focused on meticulous squad control, terrain exploitation, and the perfect fusion with role-playing elements. On the menu : the mythical Heroes of Might and Magic saga, the founding Dune series, the Myth franchise, and Warlords Battlecry.

Prepare your keyboard shortcuts and gather your troops : the time travel begins right now! This feature is only the first step of a journey through our collective memory. To celebrate this golden age properly, I invite you to join me every day on Little Big Campus for a new article dedicated to one of these sacred monsters. By the way, before we dive into the heart of the matter, I want to hear your side of the story. What was your very first massive shock during those years? The nuclear alert siren from Red Alert echoing through the speakers? A devastating Zerg rush that ruined a LAN party friendship? Or the sound of Warcraft II peasants forever engraved in your brain?

Let loose in the comments right below! Tell me about your worst defeats, your machines from back then, or your greatest all-nighters. We are among enthusiasts : I will read and reply to every single one of you so we can relive the movie together. To your keyboards!
